PROJECT: MAYHEM

Prototype Jump.jpg

About the Project

Backstage Mayhem is a project pitched by a friend pretending to be a client for my experimental freelance game dev service. I asked him to give me a fun idea for a game and I would design and build a proof of concept prototype.

So in Backstage Mayhem, the player takes control of a Rockstar that's about to play a fun show but none of the gear is setup on stage, so the player has to run around backstage collecting gear and setting them up on stage before a timer hits zero, whilst doing so the player is trying to avoid fans approaching the player asking for autographs, costing the player precious time. The player can slap them out of their sight or they can accept to sign and play a signing mini game, upon completion they're awarded points for their efforts.

I had a lot of fun concepting the idea with old mate and designing a fleshed out game from a goofy idea reflecting old mate's interest in music.

I gave myself 2 weeks to build the prototype, during this time I learned a lot about optimized coding and creating accessibility options for the player, creating third person controllers and creating in-game cutscenes, which was a lot of fun to slap together.

Despite the game's Not-So-Serious comedic theme and all round goofiness, I actually learned a lot of really important things that greatly improve work flow structure and figuring out new ways to write optimized and efficient code. Its like with every project I work on, I always learn something new that helps me in the future.
